Spring Cleaning at Riverview Park

The Bluff Walk at Riverview Park needed some attention this spring.  There were a thick layer of oak leaves on sections of the trail and some storm damage.  Overall though the trail had held up OK through the winter.

The north end of The Bluff Walk is at the Kids Playground.  The south end is by the southern baseball field.

The oak leaves were very thick on portions of the trail, and brush was encroaching in a number of places.

We attacked the trail with a variety of rakes, leaf blowers, chainsaws, hazel hoes, loppers, brushcutters, and other assorted tools.

We also removed some trash and cut out Japanese Knotweed behind the baseball field.  We had to leave early due to impending heavy rain storms.

The Bluff Walk is one of Shelton's Historic Trails with scenic views of the Housatonic River.  It's well worth exploring the next time you're near Riverview Park.

Upcoming Riverview Park Work Party

There were some good things that were done this weekend.  A Fall Clean Up work party was held at the Eklund Native Species Garden on Oak Valley Road.  Five volunteers got the place in good shape for the winter.  It's amazing what can be accomplished in a short amount of time with the right folks.  Visit the Eklund Garden Blog at the above link to see the before and after photos.

There was also a work party at the Soundview Community Garden.

And there were a couple of dedicated volunteers out cleaning and flagging the Basil Brook Bypass Trail.  Meanwhile there was a little graffiti removal and map restocking at some of trail kiosks going on.

We'll be clearing leaves, brush, etc.  Bring your non-slip boots to prevent rolling down the hill on all the acorns.

A lot of families were out enjoying the kiddie playground at the park on a nice Fall Sunday afternoon.  The Bluff Walk goes from one end of Riverview Park to the other, and has some nice views of the Housatonic River.  Hope to see you there.

Rich Brought Water to Riverview

It was a deceptively sticky morning today at Riverview Park. A bunch of us gathered to do maintenance on The Bluff Walk, a historic trail overlooking the Housatonic River. Fortunately for us Rich remembered his younger days in far-away tropical climates and brought along a lot of ice cold water (in smaller non-green containers).

The Bluff Walk was so overgrown in some areas it was hard to see there was a trail. We cut back the Japanese Knotweed, briars, and poison ivy behind the Little League baseball diamond using a variety of implements of destruction. We then brought in and placed mulch to make it easier to follow part of the trail, picked up garbage, fixed signs, blew off leaves and debris, raked, and generally spruced up the place. There's still some work to do, but we can save that until cooler weather this fall.

We had one customer and her dog come through as we were just getting one end of the mulched section finished. We timed it good and finished just as the storm was rolling in. Riverview Park on Rt. 110 is a great little urban park with some nice historic features and views of the Housatonic River - enjoy the walk this summer.
