Sucessful Shelton Day 2011

It was a beautiful Sunday.

We had probably our best Shelton Day booth ever on October 2nd. The weather was nice, there was a great turnout, and we said hi to a lot of old and new friends. We handed out several hundred new maps, talked to a lot of people and had a lot of folks sign up for trail work parties.

My favorite was the mom who signed up her son so he could earn community service hours, and then signed up her husband when we suggested it would be a great father-son hobby. Hope they turn up at our work party on Sat 10/15 behind ASF Sports on River Road.

Once again, we had a great booth location between Danny O's and Dunkin Doughnuts thanks to Sheri. A lot of our key volunteers came out to man the booth throughout the day.

Thanks to everybody who bought a tee shirt (and special thanks to the gentleman who made a donation). The trails seem to be pretty popular & it's good to see all the people enjoying Shelton's open spaces. Hope to see you at the upcoming trail parties.

Another successful Shelton Day. It started a little cold, but it warmed up when the sun came out. A lot of people stopped to say hi to Bob the Bobcat, or to pick up some wildflower seeds from Eklund Garden.

Pedro the Jackalope got a lot of paparazzi attention.

Greetings from your friendly neighborhood Shelton Trails Committee; Rich, Terry, Jim, Bill, and Sherri. We took a vote and based on how many people stopped by, it does appear that Sherri knows every single person in Shelton.

We had a good location, handed out several hundred free trail maps, and talked to people about how to enjoy the trails and parks in their neighborhood.

Nancy & her son came and helped out with the public. It's a big help when people can take time out of their weekend and volunteer. People rotated in and out of the booth. Teresa colored a couple of hundred maps and prepared about 75 packets of Shelton wildflower seeds from the Eklund Native Species Garden.

There were huge crowds of people walking up and down Howe Avenue.

Some were dressed for the cool weather....

Some were making speeches ....

and some were just waiting for the bar to open.

It was fun to talk to all our friends and volunteers; old and new. It was great to tell everybody about our news regarding the Paugussett Trail and the RecPath. We have a fun work party scheduled for next Saturday at Lane St. at 8:30 to move mulch, trim brush, and shape trail edges along the RecPath - see you there.

Shelton Day 2010

Join the Trails Committee tomorrow at Shelton Day. Our booth will be located somewhere between Dunkin' Doughnuts and Danny O's; the perfect location for the trails crew.


We'll have new maps, wildflower seeds from Eklund Garden, RecPath tee shirts, walking sticks, and lots of information. Learn about the open space in your neighborhood, good fishing spots, places to hike or bike, or how you can help your trails. Get your picture taken with Pedro the Jackalope. Who knows, you might even run into Bill Dyer in a bear suit.

Well we couldn't get Bill into a bear suit, but here's a picture of Rich, Bill, a guy in a bear suit, and Jim. They are manning, or bearing, the booths out there this afternoon. Stop by, say hello, pick up some free maps, and sign up for our trail work parties. We're getting a lot of good feedback on the trail system. The more people that we have to help maintain the trails the easier and better it is for everybody.

Shelton Day was a Success 10-4-09

We had a great turnout for Shelton Day. Last year we helped out with the Land Trust's booth & that was fun. This year we did a separate booth for the Trails Committee & the Conservation Commission. Rich & Jim are posing in front of the new canopy.

A lot of folks came up to chat - including these two from the Civil War (and no, it's not the Democrats vs. the Republicans, although we had those too). Sherri seemed to know half the people in Shelton. We had a good spot between Danny O's and Dunkin Doughnuts - we'll have to try to get that next year.

We handed out a lot of trail mails, CFPA Conn. Walk info, nature brochures, and Lynn's baking. A lot of fiends (make that friends), trail volunteers & other folks stopped by to talk and ask questions.

Some of the info got wet when a series of thunderstorms came thru in the afternoon, but then the sun came out again to round out a nice Fall Sunday. Rich, Pete, Bill, and Jim helped break down the booth. Here's Bill talking with Joe Pratt about the best places to cut down trees.

A lot of people were actually out using the trails, boat launches, and fishing areas along Shelton Lakes today as well as enjoying Shelton Day downtown. It was a great day, a number of folks signed up as trail volunteers, & we even sold a couple of tee shirts. We'll have to do it again next year. Gearing up for Shelton Day

The Trails Committee is preparing for our Shelton Day booth this weekend on Howe Avenue. It's our first time having our own booth but we were able to get a good deal on a used balloon so we'll be ready for the parade at noon.

Stop in and visit us Sunday. We will have the most important booth on the street (well, maybe not as good as the Kettlecorn folks, but a darn good booth none the less - and we're free). Learn more about the open space in your neighborhood, locate hidden fishing spots, find put-ins for whitewater kayaking, or trails to walk your dog, where to find a bobcat or coyote, or where to go to ride a bike with the kids, or places to hide from your spouse when it's time to do chores around the house. You can hear about the new Eklund Native Species Garden, handicapped accessible trails and fishing areas, how Shelton is trying to preserve farms, upcoming guided hikes, and extending the Paugussett Trail.

Lynn Reid will have baked her own weight in muffins and brownies, which are yours for the asking. Teresa Gallagher will share her favorite venison recipes as she talks about preserving our native species and possibly letterboxing. Bill Dyer will talk about Dog Parks, how to properly hug a tree, and undoubtedly golf or baseball. Terry Gallagher will sell bottles of his special mosquito repellent (contains Off, two-cycle oil, & sawdust). Jim Taradine and Pete Conway will administer the Trail Volunteer field test to anybody who thinks they can pass and wants to sign up. Rich Skudlarek will autograph copies of the new Trails End magazine & give demonstrations on different ways that bootlaces can save your life.
