Do woodpeckers read trail blazes?

Sometimes when you're out in the woods you see some odd stuff that makes you wonder.  Walking on the Paugussett Trail near Buddington Road you come across this.

We often joke that painting a trail blaze on a tree leads to it's demise.  But in this case the tree looks like it was attacked by one very determined woodpecker who possibly could read trail blazes.  The holes wrap around the tree like a house with windows winding along a staircase.  And they're not just little holes either.

The holes take up the interior of the tree, and some holes have side holes.  This was one obsessive woodpecker.

Be on the lookout for the tree if you're hiking that portion of the Paugussett Trail.  Eversource is working on some of the towers nearby, buy last year's re-route lets you hike around the work zone.

Where you may see another of nature's mysteries.  Why do coyotes like to poop on rocks?
